Events for Youth
Youth and Young Adults
At the church’s 10th triennial Episcopal Youth Event (EYE), our then-Presiding Bishop, the Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, spoke on the theme of abundant life, Sown in the Heart of Christ. “When you were baptized,” she said, “Jesus planted in you a seed, a promise that you are loved beyond knowing.”
It is the job of the church to equip young people, so that they come to experience God’s presence in their own lives, and so they may carry the love of Christ into the world.
The Convocation embraces the Episcopal Church’s Charter for Lifelong Christian Formation, Our Youth Commission, a team and lay and clergy Convocation volunteers, organizes special formation events designed for young people ages 10-29.
Youth Across Europe
Youth Across Europe offers a retreat for 13-19 year olds. Each year, a Convocation parish hosts the event, which happens during Ascensiontide weekend.
Some previous events included Listen to God, hosted by Christ Church, Clermont-Ferrand, France. Father Rob Warren and Youth Commission member Caireen Stewart (aided by the president of COMB and a trusty corps of volunteers) put their amazing creative powers to work to craft a dynamic program around the theme of discernment. As always, music and music-making were a part of this YAE weekend, as was a trip to the Puy de Dôme.
St. James’ in Florence, Italy, hosted a memorable weekend of workshops and small group discussions on the theme: Outward, Visible / Inward, Spiritual: Encountering God Right Where We Are. The highlight of the weekend was a pilgrimage to the village of Assisi.
The theme for the YAE weekend at All Saints', Waterloo, (Belgium) -- Who are you? -- focused our youths' identities as Third Culture Kids, Christians, Peacemakers and Servants.
Juniors Across Europe
In May 2013, 27 youth and 9 adults from 5 different parishes across Europe all convened at the small mountain village of Benediktbeuem, just south of Munich for the first ever Convocation-wide retreat for our ‘junior youth' (10-13 year olds).
Now an annual event, JAE kids spend a weekend together, meeting new people, learning about God and the Bible, and enjoying the beauty of creation. The retreats are a great mix of fun times, good teaching and plenty of laughs. The most recent event in May 2016 was hosted by St. James' Florence.
The Youth Commission also offers an annual retreat for those in their twenties. One such program, ‘Finding God in Your 20s: We believe. I doubt,' brought together young adults for a three-day weekend in Berlin. This group of ‘twenty-somethings’ experienced city life and explored how faith fits into their lives as young adults.
‘Happening’ is a Christian experience organized by teenagers for teenagers (for youth ages 15-18). It offers a weekend full of fun, games, surprises, spiritual renewal and empowerment.
