February 25, 2021 Listening for Silent Signs

February 25, 2021: Listening for Silent Signs

    Text:

Genesis 9:12: God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.”

    Meditation:

You cannot hear a rainbow. It is an enduring sign of God’s promise to us, the covenant that has led to our standing as God’s children. But rainbows do not make themselves known with loud sounds to demand our attention. You have to know when to look for them—what the conditions will be, where they might be found. How many rainbows have ever happened that no one saw, signs of God’s presence that no one glimpsed, because they were silent?

How do we listen for these silent signs? What are the conditions that bring them about—and the places where they might be found? What steps do we have to take in our own lives to create those conditions?

    Questions:

    • What silent, quiet signs of God’s love have appeared in your life?
    • What were the conditions that made you attentive to them—and made it possible for you to notice them?
    • What simple practice could could we take on to create those conditions intentionally?
