March 25, 2021: Listening for Our Hearts

Jeremiah 31:33: ...this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 

Meditation:  

We often speak in the church of discernment, but we rarely reflect on how discernment is different from deciding. One simple way to reflect on this is to see discernment as “thinking with our hearts.” As people of faith we are often are quick to say what we think our faith is, or what it asks us to do; but we are perhaps less conversant with how what is written on our hearts speaks through all the small choices and decisions we make that craft the life of discipleship.  

Questions: 

• What is written on your heart? What is the wisdom, what is the hope, that God has written there for you? 
• How would somehow who knows you through work, or school, or your neighborhood, see what God has written on your heart in the pattern of your life? 

• If what is written on your heart was a set of instructions for your life, are you following the instructions? Are you even reading them?
